Week 5

Differences between xhtml and html5.

What are the differences between xhtml and html? Well, just to start off with a little history HTML was introduced to the Internet in the early 1900s. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is the core language of the World Wide Web and the most recent version of HTML is HTML 5. HTML 4 was a big recommendation in 1997 but it became a rough guide only because it did not provide enough information to build implementations that interoperate with each other and more importantly deploy content. That was the same for XHTML1, which defines an XML serialization for HTML4 and Dom Level 2 HTML in which that defines JavaScript APIs for both HTML and XHTML. The biggest difference in the two are: HTML is more flexible when your marking up language framework whereas XHTML is a more restrictive subset of SGML, Wikipedia. Also in Raven the article talks about how Xhtml came from XML which means a way to store data. The only thing that the W3C decided to do was make a newer version of HTML which became XHTML. Other differences about the two were to make sure that the closing tags were matching. The Babysteps article lists the differences which are the XHTML, all documents must have Doctype declaration, the tags and declaration should be in lowercase, attribute values must be quoted and of course what i stated earlier would be to make sure you close your tags.

Browser support statistics for html5.

The first draft of HTML 5 was started in 2004. Its corrections were to define a single language of HTML that could be written in HTML syntax and in XML syntax. Also it defined detailed processing models to foster interoperable implementations, improve markup for documents and introduce markup and APIs for emerging idioms, such as Web applications. Some of the most interesting new features are the element for 2d drawing, the and elements for media playback, Support for local storage, and new for controls, like calendar, date, time email, url and search. HTML 5 is not yet an official standard, and no browsers have full HTML 5 support. But almost all major browsers continue to add new HTML 5 features to their latest versions. These browsers are Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer.
To use media in your next HTML5 application, you need to know what formats are supported. HTML5 supports AAC, MP3 and Ogg Vorbis for audio and Ogg Theora, WebM and MPEG-4 for video. Even though HTML5 supports these media formats, however, not every browser supports every format. Below shows current browsers and the media formats they support.

Browser Video Formats Audio Formats
Ogg Theora H.264 VP8 (WebM) Ogg Vorbis MP3 Wav
Internet Explorer Manual install 9.0 Manual install No Yes No
Mozilla Firefox 3.5 No 4.0 Yes No Yes
Google Chrome 3.0 No 6.0 Yes Yes Yes
Safari Manual install 3 Manual install No Yes Yes
Opera 10.50 No 10.60 Yes No Yes

Vorbis is a free software/ open source project headed by the Xiph.Org (formerly Xiphophorus company). The project produces an audio format specification and software implementation (codec) for lossy audio compression. Vorbis is most commonly used in conjunction with the Ogg container format and it is therefore often referred to as Ogg Vorbis. Vorbis project started as part of the Xiphophorus company’s Ogg project (also known as OggSquish multimedia project). Vorbis had been shown to perform significantly better than many other lossy audio formats in the past in that it produced smaller files at equivalent or higher quality while retaining computational complexity comparable to other MDCT formats such as AAC or Windows Media Audio. However, there have not been many significant tests run in recent years.
The HTML5 draft specification adds video and audio elements for embedding video and audio in HTML documents. The specification had formerly recommended support for playback of Theora video and Vorbis audio encapsulated in Ogg containers to provide for easier distribution of audio and video over the internet by using open standards, but the recommendation was soon after dropped.

WebM is an audio-video format designed to provide royalty-free, open video compression for use with HTML5 video. The project’s development is sponsored by Google Inc. A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container based on a profile of Matroska. The project releases WebM related software under a BSD license and all users are granted a worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free patent license.

The WebM project’s goal is to develop “a high-quality, open video format for the web that is freely available to everyone.” The project has the backing of Google, Mozilla, Opera, and numerous other companies. If it catches, on, it could settle the rift that currently exists with HTML5 video support, thus speeding up HTML5 adoption. Currently, there are two competing formats being used for video embedded using HTML5: H.264 (backed by Apple and other companies) and Ogg Theora (backed by Mozilla). Safari, Chrome, and other browsers support H.264 video, as will the upcoming Internet Explorer 9. On the other hand. Mozilla Firefox supports only Ogg Theora video.
Ogg is a free, open container format maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The creators of the Ogg format state that it is unrestricted by software patents and is designed to provide for efficient streaming and manipulation of high quality digital multimedia. Ogg is the same as OGG VORBIS!

How people use Twitter to Market Businesses

Twitter can be used in many ways whereas you can market professionally of even personally. But I as a user have a twitter and haven’t really gotten my hands dirty only because I’m fairly new, you can call me “OLDFASHION”. I am learning new ways every day on how to market professionally. Let me tell you when I first heard of twitter I believed it to be over rated only because I felt as if you were only blogging about what was going on at that moment but unfortunately I was completely wrong. Twitter Marketing Agency explained quite a bit about how to use twitter personally and professional. What I really got out of the article was that on a professional level it is great to tweet daily or even hourly locations of where you might be. You can also use twitter to tweet daily about specials and promotions that might be going on at that moment. Another way to use Twitter on how to market your business would be hashtags. Hashtags are exactly like SEO’s. It’s a way for your users to find your or even get advice. How do you use hashtags or you may ask what is a hashtag. Well a hashtag is tweet that has a # before the keyword. For example if you’re a graphic design and you want people to find you, you will put #graphicdesign, Open Forum. My last article was very interesting to me only because there are tons of ways to market on twitter for business it really is completely up to you. There is no wrong or right way, Chris Brogan.

How people use Facebook to Market Businesses

People use Facebook to market their business exactly like Twitter except you have a little more control on how the look and feel of the site will be. Facebook allows you to have several pages as well as a personal page. You can start on facebook with a personal profile and after you have set that all up and fixed exactly the way you want, you then can add a page. This page can be strictly business oriented. The other way that you may be able to use facebook is to invite people to your page with specials, Likes, giveaways and etc. One easy way to promote your business is to post up pictures of what you are offering/selling. For example if your business had to deal with spas, one of the pictures could be of a person getting a massage and below the picture it could state if they had massages on sale or how much they are daily. Also by creating groups and adding people to groups you have the option to create an event and invite them to join. If they join they can opt in or opt out. By having this option you will be able to see how many people will attend, how many are undecided and if they just cant come for some reason. I think facebook is a great to advertise your business if used properly.

Professional Blogging

Professional Blogging is a way to communicate to a community either by opinions, meeting deadlines, certain products, and or even debating. It can be very helpful especially using your blog to give information on products you may have created or a little background on your topic. As I looked up many different articles The Truth behind Professional Blogging, was very appealing to me. One thing that stood out to me that in my opinion I would have never guessed would be how Professional bloggers brainstorm. My thought of a blogger is a person who may sit behind a computer and go to their blog and let whatever is on their mind flow out. When brainstorming occurs it just shows me a lot more umph in how much a blogger really thinks hard about what is discussed in the forum. As in Planning for the year ahead, I also learned that when you have a site that you are blogging to and its site has posts that may need to be addressed because of the quality of design, cost, being lost or even difficult understanding is very important. It is important because as a professional blogger its best to get feedback on what people may feel about the website. Some Basic Blog Tips would be changing your style in your email, the quality of when you blog. When I’m blogging I try to look a how articles are being written and then changed by another’s overall outlook.

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimizations are used to search by keywords or phrases. But really what are search engine optimizations??? As I researched online to figure out what a SEO was I came across my first Wikipedia. Search Engine Optimizations are used a lot now only because if a user is looking for a particular item or topic they can type in keywords in the search engine. If a certain company pays money for a search engine to advertise their name it would be easier for that user to find what they are looking for. I ran across another website that explained search engine optimizations very clear, Search Engine Land. So search optimizations first start with a website of some sort. The search engine then gathers all the keywords for that site and begins to do a math equation so that when users put certain keywords in the search box the websites that are closets to the keyword will pull up. The more people that begin to visit the website the more popularity it will have to becoming on the first page of the lists. Beyond Basic SEO, helps with doing SEO but instead of you doing your own SEO, there are professionals that you can pay to help you boost the way people search you how to find you more easily. It like taking a hard task that you cannot fulfill by yourself and letting someone step in to help you achieve a higher expectation.

Week 2

What is a Personal Learning Environment?

What is a Personal Learning Environment, in my own opinion I’m making a jump on an assumption of what I think a PLE is. I’m assuming that it means that you are in a Website and you are using a tutorial or something from the website to help you learn about the website’s environment. So as I go on a search to see if my answer is in any way form or shape right or even wrong it will be interesting to find out what may change my perception about what a Personal Learning Environment is. As I looked through several articles on the web I seemed a bit lost until I found Arvixe Web Hosting. As soon as I started reading the article I immediately realize that a Personal Learning Environment is a tool that gives the owner/user designer control. In other words if I joined Twitter per say when I begin to build my profile I am able to have access to change things on my site especially to my liking. Also Online Learning Insights showed that because of the constant change in the years of technology, the developers of PLE are trying to make it even more easy for the users to navigate and build own websites. Honestly I like having a Personal Learning Environment because I like to have the freedom to upload videos, pictures and documents which Colla-borate.com explains this thoroughly.

What is RSS and how is it used?

RSS is Rich Site Summary it is basically a feed or a sense of content that changes or updates pretty frequently. What Is RSS goes right in hand to what RSS is. We use RSS every day when we visit websites. For example the news website it always being updated on a regular, in which I’m probably sure hours and minutes constantly changing. Webreference goes hand in hand with exactly what I’ll need for my own personal website. I would love to have a website with a lot of traffic, this would increase my personal business and as well profit. RSS feeds can help clients and or customers know what is added new to inventory or even what’s going on at that moment. Yahoo and MSN are two sites that use RSS feeds and it’s just very interesting to go to their websites and see what may have been posted in entertainment, Music, the News and etc. RSS has a lot of downloadable publishers that can read and help distribute your RSS feeds, RSS Reader. Some sites that use RSS feeds that we use every day or even see would be Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Worldly news and many more.

Week 1

What is Interactive Media?

In my opinion as to what is Interactive Media is to be a user for an online experience and possibly getting feedback from the computer. Well, comes to find out I was somewhat right in certain circumstances. I researched a few articles online that really explained in depth what interactive Media is. Interactive Media can be used in several ways as to Video Games, Websites, Television, Shopping Online and etc., which was found on Wikipedia. Although Wikipedia explained that the technology that is used now is basically by users, computers, and other resources. It just seemed unlikely to me that interactive media could only be user and computer-based. As turned out in my second article degreedirectory.org, Interactive is used a lot daily. Children even use interactive media when they are playing videos games and having to respond to the game for instance “Call of Duty”. This game requires a lot of interactive between the players either online or even against the computer. The child will have certain missions to complete to even begin to go to the next level. Teenagers use interactive media a lot as well especially when on their phones. For example using their phone as a navigation tool by entering a specific address, the phone reacts like a total human and responds by finding the fastest and closets route to help the teenager get to their destination as quick as possible. So as a conclusion to my opinion as to what is interactive media it is not only a user for an online experience and just getting feedback. But it is a dynamic way of being able to interact with technology all over the world as stated in ezinearticles.com.

What is Web 2.0?

What is Web 2.0, as a graphic designer I’m really not 100% sure what web 2.0 is. As I read that it comes across to me as a version of the web. For example, you may have different versions of Microsoft Word, or different versions of Adobe Cs or even different versions of web browsers like Internet Explorer. Well as I began to research on Google search engine I began to figure out that my whole guess on what is Web 2.0 was indeed completely off. As I looked on Wikipedia it became very clear to me that Web 2.0 was created to allow users to interact with others for example a type of social media. With all that said it made me understand that is really just a change in the way developers and end-users use the Web. As I continued to read on about Web 2.0 I begin to understand that it can have a lot of meanings. Whereas I may have a certain definition even though mine was not correct but in terms to what Web 2.0 may mean a lot of people come to the basics as a social media http://www.zdnet.com/blog/web2explorer/. Throughout my whole search on what Web 2.0 is I become a little confused on what it really was used for. As in the articles from Wiki and zdnet, I can conclude tons of different answers from several people but in the last article webdesign.about.com it becomes apparent that Web 2.0 meant a combination o technology. Web 2.0 allowed the users to gather information and interact with information that was collected.
